The Best Doodle Rescue to Find a Doodle-Type Dog

Last Updated on

Doodle breed dogs, such as the Labradoodle (Poodle and Labrador Retriever cross) and Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever and Poodle cross), are a favorite because of their reputation as being low-shedding and great family dogs.

Because Poodle mix dogs are part Poodle, they are often active, energetic, and brilliant. They make wonderful family dogs for people who want a friendly dog with lots of energy.

While getting a Doodle from a breeder is an option, there are still many Doodle breed dogs out there that are looking to be rescued and rehomed through specific Doodle rescue agencies. Rescuing a Doodle can be great because often, you are skipping the puppy stage and while puppies are cute, they are tons of work.

To help you find a Doodle rescue near you, I’ve compiled a list of rescues so you can possibly find a new four-legged member for your family.

Note: the Poodle mix rescues listed below are listed by country and then by state. There aren’t many Doodle rescues, however, Doodles often end up in local animal shelters rather than breed-specific shelters. Check with your local dog rescue on top of the below Doodle rescues to see if any Doodle-type dogs are available.

Is a Doodle Right for You and Your Family?

Before adopting a Doodle, it’s essential to try and decide whether a Doodle is right for your family. Many Doodles end up in a shelter because their previous owners didn’t anticipate how much work owning a Doodle dog really is. Even though they make incredibly family dogs, they require lots of work. Let’s go through some the reasons why Doodle dogs end up in shelters so you can decide whether or not you want to go forward and adopt this dog.

  • Being part Poodle, Doodles are very intelligent and require lots of mental enrichment and have medium to high levels of energy. Some people hope their Doodle will be lazy, but that’s usually never the case.
  • Just like any dog, the Doodle requires proper training and socialization otherwise they can end up with behavioral issues.
  • Doodles require lots of brushing and grooming (30 minutes – 45 minutes of brushing per day for a large dog if you want to keep their coat long, otherwise they will need to go to the groomer for a shave every six weeks. A groom costs us anywhere from $100-$150).
  • Doodles are generally high-energy dogs that require lots of exercises, or they can get destructive and bored (I suspect this is why a lot of dogs end up in rescues, not just Doodles). Ours receives around 2 hours of mental and physical exercise a day.

We have compiled information on many different popular Doodle dogs so you can research and pick the right one for your family:

How Do I Find a Doodle Rescue Near Me?

After looking at the above list, you may realize that there are a lack of Doodle rescues near your town/city. In some cases, you may have to drive to or transport the dog you wish to adopt! It’s worth reaching out to the Doodle rescue to see how they work with out-of-town applicants.

You can also check Doodle breeders. Many breeders take back dogs in situations where their homes can no longer take care of them and then adopt them out. We put together a directory of Doodle breeders divided up by Doodle dog and location:

Also, keep in mind that Doodle dogs don’t always go to a specific “Doodle rescue” and they may end up at your local animal shelter or adoption agency, and you should look to dog shelters as well to see if they have any Doodle-dogs available.

Fostering Doodles

Many dogs are looking for foster homes while they transition to their forever homes, so why not help them in the process?

If you aren’t ready to commit to being a Doodle owner just yet, but still want to take care of animals, consider fostering! Fostering dogs is a rewarding way to take care of an animal, help your local shelters, and help other dogs find their forever homes.

Through fostering, you can see what owning a Doodle is like. Reaching out to your local rescues (and the ones we’ve listed above) can help you get the process started.

If you’re open to other breeds to potentially rescue, take a look at some of our other breed-specific rescue lists:

    • Yes…. I’ve had dogs since I was born, i have always loved them…. My Pitt is going to die soon…. I’m 60. Soon to be 70…. I want to leave no animal behind, although I have 3 kids all dog owners and lovers…. But still I thought I’d try to help a poor baby who lost her parents and finds herself alone…. I need a teeny one as I plan to travel (my son is in the us and my family in Europe) and I won’t put the dog with the luggage.
I decided adopting an older abandoned dog would be the kindest for both of us..´
      Thank you
